Greece and Cyprus to Conduct Joint Emergency Exercise on Andros Island

Andros:Greece and Cyprus are joining their operational forces for a transnational exercise named "SYNASPIS 2026," scheduled for October 20 on the Greek island of Andros. This exercise aims to enhance the preparedness and coordination of the two countries in handling incidents involving a large number of casualties. It is organized by the National Centre for Emergency Care (EKAB) of Greece and the Ambulance Service of Cyprus, under the State Health Services Organisation (SHSO/OKYpY), with support from the Municipality of Andros.

According to Cyprus News Agency, the exercise will take place in a semi-mountainous area near Chora, Andros, and will simulate a road accident where a tourist bus veers off the road, resulting in a mass-casualty incident. The drill will focus on procedures for rapid mobilization, operational coordination, casualty triage, rescue operations, the provision of pre-hospital care, and patient transport.

The collaboration between Greece and Cyprus in emergency pre-hospital care is intended to strengthen the readiness of both countries to respond effectively to major incidents and disasters, particularly in island and remote areas. The exercise aims to improve the simultaneous management of a large number of casualties and enhance operational cooperation between the two nations.

"SYNASPIS 2026" is seen as a significant step toward further strengthening joint training initiatives and enhancing the capacity for mutual assistance. The findings from the exercise will help evaluate current procedures, identify areas for improvement, and bolster coordinated responses to mass-casualty health incidents.

The exercise is also an opportunity for political and administrative leaders to observe the operational capabilities of the teams involved, emphasizing the importance of continuous training, operational readiness, and cross-border cooperation. Through joint training and the exchange of expertise, EKAB and the Cyprus Ambulance Service aim to strengthen their collaboration and ability to respond effectively to complex emergency situations, with the protection of human life as a steadfast priority.
