Nicosia: Frontex has intensified its operations in the English Channel as part of the UK-France Channel action plan, deploying a patrol vessel for the first time to assist France in search and rescue missions. This initiative aims to address the perilous crossings of small boats, which pose significant risks to human lives.
According to Cyprus News Agency, the joint effort between the UK and France, with the support of Frontex, has already resulted in a 44% reduction in border crossings compared to 2025. EU Commissioner Magnus Brunner emphasized the importance of decisive action to halt dangerous journeys and highlighted the need to strengthen external border security and enhance operational effectiveness, which will be central to a new Frontex mandate proposed for the autumn.
Frontex's involvement marks a significant step in the ongoing battle against human trafficking in the Channel. By deploying resources to assist in search and rescue operations, the agency aims to mitigate the risks associated with illegal crossings and ensure the safety of individuals attempting these dangerous journeys.
