Strasbourg: European Parliament President Roberta Metsola expressed confidence in Cyprus' leadership as it assumes the EU Council Presidency, stating, "I know that Europe is in the best of hands." President Nikos Christodoulides assured collaboration with the European Parliament to fortify Europe internally and enhance its role as a beacon of stability, peace, and prosperity.
According to Cyprus News Agency, both leaders spoke at a press conference following Christodoulides' presentation of Cyprus' EU Council Presidency priorities to the European Parliament plenary. Metsola emphasized the Parliament's support in resolving the Cyprus issue based on UN resolutions and EU values, while both leaders reiterated respect for Denmark's and Greenland's sovereignty and territorial integrity. They also stressed the importance of dialogue and de-escalation in transatlantic relations.
During the session, Metsola welcomed President Christodoulides, highlighting Europe's current challenges in security, geopolitics, and competitiveness. She expressed confidence in Europe's ability to respond with clarity and resolve under Cyprus' leadership. Metsola underscored the importance of competitiveness, simplification, and integration in strengthening the Single Market and Europe's readiness in security and defense, particularly in support of Ukraine.
Addressing the situation in Greenland, Metsola reiterated efforts to deescalate tensions and reinforce the transatlantic relationship. She mentioned US Speaker Mike Johnson's remarks, aligning with her views on the importance of unity and collective action. Metsola assured support for Denmark and Greenland, emphasizing respect for their sovereignty.
Metsola also spoke on Iran, advocating for tougher sanctions and designating the Islamic Revolutionary Corps as a terror organization. She reaffirmed the European Parliament's commitment to a unified, sovereign European state, supporting Cyprus as it leads the Council during challenging times.
President Christodoulides highlighted the critical role of the European Parliament in the success of Cyprus' presidency, emphasizing a structured partnership to achieve a stronger, more stable Union. He acknowledged the European responsibility of Cyprus' Presidency amidst global challenges and outlined a vision for a robust EU, capable of protecting its citizens and thriving on innovation and business.
