Rio de janeiro: The 10th International Orthodontic Congress of the World Federation of Orthodontists (WFO) recently concluded in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, marking a significant event in the field of orthodontics. The congress, held from October 22 to 25, 2025, welcomed over 7,000 orthodontists from 100 countries, including 50 participants from Cyprus and Greece. Among the highlights was the recognition of Professor Athanasios E. Athanasiou, Dean of the School of Dentistry at European University Cyprus (EUC), who was awarded the prestigious ‘William H. DeKock Outstanding Service Award’ by the WFO.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Professor Athanasiou, who served as the Guest of Honor at the event, received the WFO’s highest award in acknowledgment of his significant contributions to orthodontic science and education. In his speech, he shared insights from his tenure as the former President of the WFO, underscoring the importance of academic excellence, global collaboration, and active participation in professional and scientific organizations. He also emphasized the EUC School of Dentistry’s role as a leading institution in education, research, and community service within Cyprus and across Europe.
The European University Cyprus School of Dentistry is distinguished for offering the only Dental Degree program in Cyprus, which is fully recognized throughout the European Union. The program includes clinical training at the EUC Dental Clinic, a modern facility equipped with advanced technology that serves educational purposes and provides community services. Additionally, the school is a full member of the Association for Dental Education in Europe (ADEE).
The School of Dentistry at EUC also offers a Master of Science in Orthodontics, a three-year program designed to provide comprehensive theoretical and clinical training for dentists aspiring to specialize in orthodontics. Professor Athanasiou’s recent accolade at the WFO World Congress further highlights the international reach and scientific contributions of the EUC School of Dentistry, reinforcing its leadership in dental education, research, and social innovation both within Cyprus and beyond.
