European Commission Takes Action Against Cyprus Over Waste Directive Non-Compliance

Brussels:The European Commission has issued a reasoned opinion against Cyprus and six other member states for failing to notify the transposition of the directive on waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) into their national laws.

According to Cyprus News Agency, this move marks the second step in the infringement procedure, following an initial formal notice. The directive in question, Directive 2012/19/EU as amended by Directive 2024/884/EU, had a transposition deadline of 9 October 2025. The directive aims to enhance environmental and human health protection by prioritizing waste prevention and promoting the reuse, recycling, and recovery of waste to improve resource efficiency.

The European Commission initiated the procedure in November 2025 by sending letters of formal notice to Bulgaria, Czechia, Spain, Cyprus, Luxembourg, Poland, and Romania. Since these member states have not yet notified the full transposition of the directive into national law, the Commission has now escalated the matter by sending reasoned opinions. These countries have two months to comply and implement the necessary measures; otherwise, the Commission may refer the cases to the Court of Justice of the European Union.
