European Commission Pledges Continued Support for Great Sea Interconnector Project

Brussels: The European Commission will keep doing everything in its power to help the Great Sea Interconnector (GSI) project advance, European Commissioner for Energy and Housing, Dan J¸rgensen told CNA on Wednesday. The Commissioner held a meeting in Brussels with the Energy Ministers of Greece and Cyprus to discuss key energy initiatives, including GSI.

According to Cyprus News Agency, Commissioner J¸rgensen described the meeting as “constructive,” highlighting the support the EU offers to the GSI project through CEF funding. He emphasized the importance of the project, as outlined in the Energy Highways initiative announced by President Von der Leyen. This initiative aims to connect Cyprus with continental Europe to end its electricity isolation, which is crucial for reducing energy prices and ensuring energy independence within the EU.

J¸rgensen expressed optimism about continuing collaboration with Greece and Cyprus to realize the project, noting the significance of improved interconnectivity for the EU. This sentiment was echoed in a post-meeting message on X (formerly Twitter), where he reaffirmed the EU’s strong support for the GSI and highlighted the upcoming Energy Highways as essential for lowering energy costs and enhancing independence.
