Brussels: The latest Eurobarometer survey released today reveals a significant rise in trust towards the European Union, marking the highest level in 18 years. Alongside this trust, there is also unprecedented support for the euro and a strong desire for a unified defence and security policy among EU citizens.
According to Cyprus News Agency, 52% of Europeans express trust in the EU, with young people aged 15-24 showing even higher levels of trust at 59%. Similarly, 52% of Europeans trust the European Commission, with young citizens accounting for 57% of this trust. In contrast, trust in national governments and parliaments remains lower, at 36% and 37% respectively. Furthermore, three-quarters of respondents feel a sense of EU citizenship, the highest in over 20 years.
Support for the euro has reached a record high, with 74% of Europeans and 83% of those in the euro area backing the common currency. Despite mixed feelings about the current economic situation, with 44% viewing it positively and 48% negatively, a majority believe the situation will remain stable over the next year.
The survey also highlights a strong demand for a more assertive EU, with 69% of respondents viewing the EU as a stabilizing force globally. A significant majority, 88%, advocate for more rules-based international cooperation, and 81% support a common defence and security policy, the highest level of support since 2004. Citizens also prioritize EU budget spending on defence, security, and public health.
The EU’s response to the war in Ukraine maintains steady support, with 80% of Europeans welcoming Ukrainian refugees and 76% backing financial and humanitarian aid to Ukraine. Economic sanctions on Russia are supported by 72% of EU citizens, while 60% approve of granting Ukraine candidate status, and 59% agree with EU funding for military equipment for Ukraine.
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is perceived as the most pressing issue at the EU level, with 77% acknowledging it as a threat to EU security. The survey underscores the EU’s commitment to peace, democracy, and the rule of law as core values.
The Eurobarometer findings come as the EU is closing in on its 2030 climate and energy targets. The European Commission’s assessment of the National Energy and Climate Plans indicates progress towards a 55% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and an increased share of renewable energy. This progress reflects the EU’s determination to meet its climate commitments while boosting industrial competitiveness and social equity.
