Nicosia: The European Union's Special Representative for Cyprus and Executive Vice-President of the European Commission, Raffaele Fitto, is scheduled to arrive in Cyprus on Thursday. During his visit, Fitto is set to engage in significant discussions with both the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, and the Turkish Cypriot leader, Tufan Erhrman, on Friday. According to Cyprus News Agency, the visit is part of Fitto's mandate to support the UN-led settlement process. This initiative involves close cooperation and coordination with the UN Secretary-General's Personal Envoy on Cyprus, María Ángela Holguín Cuéllar. The discussions aim to further the efforts of peace and reconciliation on the island. President Christodoulides announced on Wednesday that his meeting with Fitto is scheduled for Friday, where they will discuss the ongoing issues in Cyprus. Fitto is also expected to engage in talks with Erhrman, focusing on the UN's recent initiatives to resolve the long-standing division of the island . Fitto's visit aligns with the conclusion of UN Secretary-General António Guterres' recent trip to Cyprus. Guterres expressed his intention to organize another 5+1 meeting on the Cyprus issue, emphasizing the need for adequate preparation regarding confidence building, methodology, and substance. This initiative considers the progress already made in previous negotiations. Cyprus has been divided since 1974 following Turkey's invasion and occupation of its northern part. Despite several rounds of UN-led peace talks, a resolution has not been achieved. The last significant negotiation attempt in July 2017 at Crans-Montana in Switzerland ended without a conclusive agreement. After informal meetings in 2025 and a subsequent hiatus, preparations are underway for a new meeting in a broader format. This comes as the term of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres approaches its conclusion. María Angela Holguín, as Guterres' Personal Envoy on Cyprus, is actively engaging with involved parties, while Raffaele Fitto represents the European Commission in his capacity as Special Representative for Cyprus, succeeding the former EU special envoy Johannes Hahn.
