EU Reaffirms Commitment to Peace Efforts in Ukraine, Costa Announces

Brussels: The EU continues to support efforts toward a just and sustainable peace in Ukraine, European Council President Antonio Costa said on Tuesday, noting that, as a first step, Russia must ‘immediately end the violence’.

According to Cyprus News Agency, Costa announced the beginning of the European Council videoconference he convened on Tuesday in a post on X. The aim of this gathering was to debrief on the discussions regarding Ukraine. Costa emphasized that the EU ‘firmly supports’ the Ukrainian people and President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Costa stated, ‘Ukraine has been – and will remain – at the top of Leaders’ agendas in the weeks and months ahead, as we continue to support efforts toward a just and sustainable peace. As a first step, Russia must immediately end the violence’.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also contributed her thoughts, indicating that at the European Council meeting convened by Costa, they were evaluating ‘the progress made in our efforts for peace for Ukraine’. She highlighted that talks in Washington DC had advanced on strong security guarantees for Ukraine, ending the bloodshed, sanctions, and the return of the abducted children. She further noted that their work and close cooperation continue.
