EU Parliament Urges Continued Support for Ukraine Amidst Russia Conflict

Brussels: The European Parliament has reinforced its commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty and EU aspirations amidst ongoing tensions with Russia. A report by the Foreign Affairs Committee, adopted with significant majority, underscores the importance of Ukraine maintaining momentum in implementing EU-related reforms and highlights the EU’s dedication to a just and lasting peace.

According to Cyprus News Agency, the report, which assesses Ukraine’s EU accession preparations, received 418 votes in favor, 135 against, and 41 abstentions. It stresses the European Parliament’s unwavering support for Ukraine’s independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity, emphasizing that any peaceful resolution must align with the Ukrainian people’s will.

The report commends Ukraine’s efforts in bolstering democratic institutions and urges Kyiv to continue advancing rule-of-law, judicial, and anti-corruption reforms. MEPs emphasize the necessity of transparent selection processes for judicial and anti-corruption bodies and call for intensified reforms in these areas, which are crucial for EU membership and economic stability.

The European Parliament also calls on the European Commission to expedite negotiation clusters to facilitate Ukraine’s EU membership bid, contingent upon the country’s adherence to EU regulations and completion of ongoing reforms.

Concerns were raised about the United States’ shifting stance on Russia’s aggression under President Donald Trump. MEPs stress the importance of the EU and its member states remaining strategic allies to Ukraine, reinforcing leadership in supporting Ukraine’s fight for sovereignty, peace, and justice. Recent talks between President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, amidst escalating Russian attacks on Ukraine, have heightened EU concerns.

MEPs urge President Trump to implement further economic sanctions against Russia and its enablers and reiterate their commitment to providing security guarantees for Ukraine, including strengthening its armed forces and defense industry.

Rapporteur Michael Gahler highlighted the necessity of solid reforms for Ukraine’s EU accession, praising the country’s civil society role in the reform process. The report represents the European Parliament’s official stance on EU-Ukraine relations and follows Ukraine’s EU candidate status and accession negotiations, marking a significant step in Ukraine’s EU integration journey.
