Luxembourg: Minister of Transport Alexis Vafeades emphasized the need to establish a balanced approach to ensure passenger rights in the European Union, as he arrived for the Transport, Telecommunications and Energy Council meeting in Luxembourg. The meeting focused on reaching a political consensus on flight cancellations and air passenger rights.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Vafeades highlighted the importance of a “golden mean” solution that could reduce flight cancellations while ensuring citizens understand their compensation rights. The proposed reform seeks to enhance current regulations concerning air passenger rights and airline liabilities. It aims to introduce new rights related to information, care, and re-routing for stranded passengers, alongside improved complaint procedures and enforcement measures. The reform also intends to clarify existing legal ambiguities and establish new rights.
Vafeades also addressed the issue of air congestion, which is particularly significant for Cyprus, with an expected annual increase of 5%. He compared the situation to road congestion, stressing the need for a constructive solution that allows for continued development without restrictions. The Minister expressed the importance of hiring new air traffic controllers and enhancing the efficiency of air travel.
Additionally, Vafeades mentioned discussions on the roadworthiness of heavy trucks and the implications of new technologies and electric vehicles, which impact infrastructure quality.
