EU Military Committee Convenes in Cyprus to Address Geopolitical Challenges

Nicosia: The current geopolitical situation was discussed at the EU Military Committee meeting (EUMC Away Days), which took place in Nicosia, from 15 to 17 April 2026, within the framework of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU. The meeting was attended by the Military Representatives of the Member States, representatives of EU agencies and services, as well as the Chain of Command of the National Guard (NG).

According to Cyprus News Agency, the National Guard General Staff (NGGS) said in a press release that 'in their addresses, the Minister of Defence, the NGGS Hierarchy and the Chairman of the Military Committee referred to the current geopolitical situation and recent developments on a global scale, the prospect of strengthening the EU's defence capacity, as well as the objectives of the Cyprus Presidency for strengthening the Union's Security and Defence Policy.'

During their stay in Cyprus, the Military Representatives visited the facilities of the NGGS where they were informed about its mission and work, the Ledra Street Observatory, where they were briefed on the prevailing political-military situation, and the Makedonitissa Military Cemetery, where the Chairman of the Military Committee, General Se¡n Clancy, laid a wreath in tribute.
