Accra:European Council President António Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen have expressed the European Union's solidarity with Greece and Cyprus in response to the Libyan Parliament's ratification of the Turkish-Libyan "memorandum."
According to Cyprus News Agency, the two EU leaders voiced "deep regret" over the ratification of the Libya-Turkiye Memorandum of Understanding, which concerns the delimitation of maritime jurisdictions in the Mediterranean Sea. They emphasized that the EU's stance on this issue, as clearly articulated by the European Council in 2019, has not changed.
Costa and von der Leyen were firm in their critique of the agreement, stating it infringes on the sovereign rights of third states, does not comply with the Law of the Sea, and is considered null and void. They concluded their statement by reaffirming their support for Greece and Cyprus.
The EU also reiterated its longstanding position against any external interference in Libya.
