Nuuk:Brussels Commissioner Costas Kadis is scheduled to visit Greenland on October 15-16. This trip comes after President Ursula von der Leyen and Executive Vice-President Henna Virkkunen visited Greenland in September, which led to the EU-Greenland-Denmark Joint Declaration.
According to Cyprus News Agency, the Joint Declaration emphasizes cooperation in ocean governance and the blue economy. It aims to promote sustainable management and conservation of marine resources, including fisheries. Other cooperation areas include connectivity, renewable energy, critical raw materials, sustainable tourism, and investment.
During his two-day visit, Commissioner Kadis will tour Royal Greenland A/S, the Greenland Fisheries and Hunting Control Authority, and the Border Inspection Post in Nuuk. He is also expected to meet with Greenlandic officials responsible for foreign affairs and Arctic cooperation.
On October 16, Kadis will visit the University of Greenland and the Greenland Institute of Natural Resources, where discussions will involve marine science and fisheries stock assessments. He will also meet with Minister Peter Borg to discuss issues related to fisheries, hunting, agriculture, and self-sufficiency.
This visit aims to advance cooperation with Greenland, respecting its autonomy and local resource management. The visit also ties into the EU's £200 million Global Gateway Partnership Package for 2026-2027, which supports various projects including renewable energy and sustainable tourism.
