EU Climate Commissioner Engages in Paris Talks on 2040 Climate Target and Sustainable Aviation

Paris: Commissioner for climate, net zero and clean growth, Wopke Hoekstra, is currently in Paris to exchange with government representatives on the progress made implementing the EU’s 2030 climate and energy legislative framework and on the upcoming proposal for a 2040 EU climate target, which is scheduled on 2 July.

According to Cyprus News Agency, a press release by the Commission states that Hoekstra continues to engage with Member States and stakeholders as he finalises preparations. He is expected to meet bilaterally with Agn¨s Pannier-Runacher, Minister of Ecological Transition, Biodiversity, Forests, Sea and Fisheries, and with Marc Ferracci, Minister for Industry and Energy. Alongside Minister Agn¨s Pannier-Runacher, he will also have a meeting with Huang Runqiu, Minister of Ecology and Environment of China.

In the afternoon, the Commissioner will attend the Paris Air Show, where he will visit several stands of aviation manufacturers and exchange with chiefs of innovative companies committed to climate neutrality of the sector. Notably, he will visit the AURA AERO company, which is developing a hybrid-electric regional aircraft with support from the EU’s Innovation Fund.

Commissioner for Space and Defence Andrius Kubilius was also at the Paris Air Show yesterday to underline Europe’s strategic commitment to a competitive and innovative space and defence industry. Commissioner for Transport and Sustainable Tourism Apostolos Tzitzikostas attended on Monday, highlighting the EU’s strong political backing for the sector and the need for sustainable aviation, the press release says.
