EU and Turkey to Hold High-Level Talks on Cyprus Issue

Brussels:A high-level meeting between the EU and Turkey is scheduled for October to address the resumption of Cyprus talks and explore progress in EU-Turkey relations, as announced by Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides. This announcement was made during his arrival for the second day of the EU summit.

According to Cyprus News Agency, President Christodoulides revealed that the meeting will occur at the request of the UN Secretary-General, aiming to create conditions for renewed negotiations. He emphasized that any progress in EU-Turkey relations is contingent upon these talks, which are based on an agreed framework.

The President expressed optimism that the visit of the UN Secretary-General's Personal Envoy to Cyprus by the end of October could foster positive developments. He noted the EU's potential leading role in resolving the Cyprus issue and welcomed Raffaele Fitto's appointment as the European Commission's Special Representative for Cyprus, highlighting the EU's commitment to the matter.

During discussions at the European Council, Christodoulides mentioned Cyprus' planned participation in the COP31 climate summit in Antalya. He reported that EU leaders, including Ursula von der Leyen and Antonio Costa, engaged with the Turkish government regarding statements made by the Turkish Cypriot leader. He stated that if Turkey's responses are implemented, Cyprus would be satisfied with the developments.

Christodoulides also shared his disappointment over the postponed EU-Gulf Cooperation Council summit, stressing the importance of engaging with regional countries during challenging times. He highlighted Cyprus' proactive stance, citing the recent participation of Cyprus' Energy Minister in a Saudi Arabian conference.

Regarding migration, the President advocated for cooperation over conflict among EU leaders, especially in light of a significant reduction in migrant arrivals to Cyprus. He urged a strategic discussion to identify and address gaps, emphasizing the importance of unity in tackling migration challenges.

On energy discussions, Christodoulides noted that the agreed conclusions on ETS2 were satisfactory, emphasizing the need for further postponement of its implementation due to current energy cost challenges. He also commented on the Multiannual Financial Framework, expressing hope for a more concrete examination of new own resources to minimize budget cuts, despite some opposition from member states.
