EU a Champion in Gender Equality and Protection of Women’s Rights Says DepMin

Brussels: The European Union has always stood by women being a champion in gender equality and the protection of women’s rights, said Deputy Minister for European Affairs Marilena Raouna addressing an event on Tuesday entitled “Women and the European Union”.

According to Cyprus News Agency, Raouna referred to directives and regulations on critical issues such as equal treatment in the workplace, equal access to goods and services, the protection of pregnant workers and the balance between professional and family life.

The Deputy Minister also said that the Gender Equality Strategy 2020-2025 set ambitious goals. She added that within the framework of the Trio EU Presidency with Poland and Denmark, “special emphasis will be placed on combating gender-based violence.”

Raouna referred to actions and measures taken by the Government for the effective prevention and combating of violence against women.

She reiterated that the exercise of the Presidency of the Council of the EU constitutes “a huge challenge, an extremely demanding and multidimensional task and an excellent opportunity, especially for a small, occupied member state.”
