EP President Roberta Metsola to Visit Cyprus Ahead of EU Presidency

Nicosia: European Parliament President, Roberta Metsola, will embark on a working visit to Cyprus on May 10, in preparation for the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU scheduled for the first half of 2026. The visit aims to strengthen diplomatic ties and cooperation ahead of Cyprus’s EU leadership role.

According to Cyprus News Agency, President Nikos Christodoulides will officially welcome Metsola at the Presidential Palace in the morning, setting the stage for a private meeting between the two leaders. This meeting is expected to address key issues and strategies relevant to Cyprus’s upcoming EU presidency.

Following her engagement with President Christodoulides, Metsola will proceed to the House of Representatives for discussions with its President, Annita Demetriou. The agenda for these discussions will likely include legislative priorities and collaboration within the EU framework.

A notable highlight of the visit will be Metsola’s participation in an event at the CYENS Centre of Excellence, celebrating Europe’s Day. Titled “Your Europe, your Future: A Dialogue with youth,” the event will feature addresses from President Christodoulides, President Metsola, and Deputy Minister of European Affairs, Marilena Raouna. The session will provide a platform for university students, including Turkish Cypriots from the government-controlled areas, to engage with the leaders through a Q and A segment.

The itinerary also includes a guided tour to the cease-fire line, offering Metsola insight into the ongoing division in Cyprus since the Turkish invasion in 1974. The visit will conclude with a working lunch hosted by President Christodoulides before Metsola’s departure in the afternoon.
