Nicosia:Energy cooperation in the Eastern Mediterranean was the central topic of a meeting held on Friday between the Minister of Energy, Commerce and Industry of the Republic of Cyprus, Michael Damianos, and US Senator Rick Scott.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Minister Damianos emphasized the strategic importance of energy cooperation, noting that security of supply and diversification of energy sources and routes are becoming increasingly crucial. The US Senator highlighted Cyprus as a significant ally of the United States, underlining the importance of its sovereignty and security from both military and energy perspectives.
Minister Damianos also addressed the 3+1 cooperation framework involving Cyprus, Greece, Israel, and the United States. He stated that this collaboration could enhance regional energy security, protect critical infrastructure, and develop reliable energy corridors to Europe. He reiterated Cyprus' commitment to supporting joint initiatives and projects for closer coordination among the partners.
Additionally, the potential development of natural resources in the Eastern Mediterranean and the significance of regional connectivity were topics of discussion. The operations of US energy companies, such as Chevron and ExxonMobil, in Cyprus' Exclusive Economic Zone, were highlighted as key areas of cooperation contributing to the development of Cypriot natural gas fields.
Minister Damianos pointed out that Cyprus remains the only EU Member State without an electricity interconnection, making energy isolation a strategic priority to overcome. In this regard, the Great Sea Interconnector project was identified as vital for energy supply security and regional stability.
The goal, as stated by the Energy Minister, is to enhance cooperation with the US and regional partners, grounded in international law, mutual benefit, and the shared objective of a more interconnected and energy-diverse Eastern Mediterranean.
Senator Scott commended Cyprus as a valuable ally to the US, describing it as a beautiful country with excellent leadership. He noted his visit to Greece and his upcoming trip to Israel, stressing the importance of Cyprus' security and sovereignty from both military and energy standpoints.
He further discussed the significance of the 3+1 scheme for Cyprus, the US, Greece, and Israel, and mentioned the opportunities for energy independence involving Cyprus, Israel, and Greece. Scott also addressed challenges posed by Turkey, expressing hope for peace and stability through respect for national sovereignty and energy independence.
The Senator criticized Turkish President Erdogan, pointing out issues with Turkey's actions in Cyprus and the Middle East, and questioned Turkey's alignment with NATO and the US. He concluded by expressing the US desire for Turkey to act as a responsible member of the international community.
