Nicosia: The First Youth Bicommunal Chess Tournament was organised by the Embassy of Hungary at the Ledra Palace Hotel.
According to Cyprus News Agency, the event was supported by the UNFICYP and technically organised by the Cyprus Chess Federation, with both Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot arbiters participating.
The embassy’s press release highlighted that more than 120 children under the age of 16 from both sides of the island participated in the event, promoting friendship and peace. The opening ceremony featured speeches from Dr. Krisztina Lakos, Ambassador of Hungary to Cyprus, Chrysanthos Fakas, Deputy Mayor of Nicosia, and Constantinos Louizou from the newly established Bicommunal Technical Committee on Youth. They all stressed the importance of such programs for fostering collaboration between the communities.
