Limassol: An electricity authority (EAC) team was set up earlier on Wednesday at the crisis center in Limassol for coordination as regards tackling the fires in Limassol and Paphos and to work towards restoring damage and power, the EAC’s spokesperson Christina Papadopoulou told CNA.
According to Cyprus News Agency, a person with severe burns was being transferred to the Emergency Department of the Limassol General Hospital. Papadopoulou stated that EAC crews rushed to the scene from the first moment and were standing by, waiting for the green light by the Fire Service to immediately proceed with restoring any damage caused to the grid by the fire in Limassol and Paphos.
Regarding the fire in Limassol, Papadopoulou mentioned that the EAC’s self-protection system was activated after the fire broke out, cutting off the power supply to 19 villages. In Paphos, 10 villages were reported to be without power.
In Limassol, power was cut off in the villages of Agios Ambrosios, Agios Therapon, Arsos, Kissousa, Kato Kivides, Kouka, Malia, Mandria, Omodos, Pachna, Pera Pedi, Kato Platres, Potamiou, Silikou, Sotira, Souni, Vasa Koilaniou, Vouni, and Zanakia. In Paphos, the communities of Ayia Varvara, Axylou, Holetria, Kelokedara, Nata, Kato Panagia, Pano Panagia, Pentalia, Theletra, and Timi were affected by power outages.
The state health services organisation reported that all public hospitals’ accident and emergency departments were on standby, along with the Nicosia General Hospital’s Burns Unit. Three ambulances were on site in Limassol, and two specialised nurses, who man the helicopters for air transport, were also present.
The organisation’s spokesperson, Pambos Charilaou, noted that incidents would be treated and stabilised on site. If further medical care is required, such as in cases of severe respiratory distress, injuries, fractures, or burns, patients will be transferred to the accident and emergency departments of the General Hospitals. Charilaou confirmed that a person with severe burns was given first aid and was being transferred to the Emergency Department of the Limassol General Hospital.
