Nicosia: The Minister of Defence, Vasilis Palmas, assured that the safety of the new conscripts of the 2025 series is the Ministry’s top priority. Speaking during the swearing-in ceremony of the new recruits on Tuesday at the “Tassos Papadopoulos – Eleftheria” indoor hall, Palmas noted that “our human resources are our most valuable asset, which is why we work intensively and devote all our efforts to provide them with maximum security and the best living conditions”.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Palmas referred to the swearing-in ceremony as an event that annually signifies the integration of new human resources into the country’s armed forces. These new recruits are expected to become the driving force of the National Guard, contributing to its renewal and strengthening capabilities, essential for the successful execution of its mission.
Addressing the new recruits, Palmas stated that they are now assuming “the sacred duty and obligation to defend the independence and territorial integrity of the Republic of Cyprus,” following in the footsteps of previous conscripts. He emphasized the importance of protecting freedom and democracy, which allows the state and its institutions to function effectively and prosper.
Palmas called on the recruits to take pride in their service, contributing to the defence of the highest ideals of freedom, security, and justice. He reiterated that human resources are pivotal for the National Guard to fulfill its duties as a defence and deterrence force against any threat.
Meanwhile, Chief of the National Guard, Lt. Gen. Georgios Tsitsikostas, addressed new conscripts in Paphos, emphasizing that “there is no room for complacency”. Speaking at the “Christos Kellis” camp in Kissonerga, Paphos, he highlighted the ongoing presence of the occupying army and escalating Turkish provocations as a constant reminder of the need for vigilance to defend national sovereignty.
Lt. Gen. Tsitsikostas urged the conscripts to be in constant readiness, emphasizing that the oath they took signifies a commitment to defending their land and fulfilling the historical mission entrusted to them. He noted that military service is a foundational experience, providing valuable skills for their future.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and occupied the island’s northern third.
