Cyprus University of Technology Advances Biomimicry Training for Engineers

Limassol:The Cyprus University of Technology (CUT) has successfully completed the second round of its 'Bio-inspired Innovation and Design for Sustainable Engineering Solutions' course. This initiative, organized by the Centre for Lifelong Learning and the Department of Civil Engineering and Geomatics, aims to help professionals incorporate natural principles into engineering and design.

According to Cyprus News Agency, the course is a part of the BuildSkills Academy project, intended to introduce participants to biomimicry. This approach uses nature's systems and processes as a guide to solve human engineering and design challenges.

The latest iteration of the course was offered in a hybrid format, combining in-person sessions at CUT in Limassol with online learning. This format made it more accessible for professionals while maintaining its interactive nature. Participants learned to apply biological systems and natural processes to develop innovative solutions for sustainable built environments.

The course covered key areas such as the principles of biomimicry, translating biological strategies into engineering solutions, and tools like Life-Cycle Assessment (LCA) and systems mapping. Across both rounds, around 20 participants from various professional backgrounds engaged with the training to enhance their skills in applying biomimicry to engineering and design.

The training is part of a broader initiative by the BuildSkills Academy, which is co-funded by the European Union through the Erasmus+ Programme. The Academy aims to develop skills necessary for the green and digital transformation of the construction sector and to address emerging skills gaps in the built environment.
