London:Cyprus' tourism sector has demonstrated remarkable resilience in 2026, despite facing challenges due to regional developments. This positive performance was highlighted by Cyprus' Deputy Minister of Tourism, Costas Koumis, at the World Travel Market (WTM) event in London. He noted that early signs from the British market for 2027 are encouraging, with major tour operators planning to increase airline seat availability to the island.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Koumis emphasized that despite uncertainties in the tourism market following an incident on March 1, the industry managed to contain its losses effectively. The decline in tourist arrivals has reduced to 5.6% compared to the previous year, and further improvements are anticipated by the end of 2026. He credited the sector's resilience to statistical data and expert analysis.
Looking towards 2027, Koumis expressed cautious optimism, citing positive initial discussions with Cyprus' strategic partners in the British market. He announced that major tour operators intend to boost airline seat capacity to Cyprus, which could lead to increased visitor arrivals from the UK. However, he cautioned that rising airfares may impact consumer holiday planning decisions next year.
Despite these potential challenges, Koumis is confident that Cyprus' tourism industry will navigate them successfully. Strengthening air connectivity between Cyprus and the United Kingdom remains a key focus of the country's tourism policy. Currently, Cyprus is connected to 18 British cities through six airlines, with plans to introduce a seventh carrier to enhance travel options.
Koumis shared his insights at the World Travel Market, a significant international tourism event that draws over 180 countries, 4,000 exhibitors, and 5,500 professional buyers, with expected attendance exceeding 46,000 participants. The exhibition provides a platform for reviewing past tourism seasons and shaping future trends and partnerships.
The WTM event serves as a crucial gathering for government officials, tourism organizations, travel industry businesses, airlines, and other key stakeholders in the global tourism sector.
