Limassol: The official handover ceremony for hosting the European Maritime Day (EMD) 2026 took place on Friday, May 23, 2025, in Cork, Ireland, during the closing ceremony of this year’s celebrations. The ceremony was attended by European Commissioner for Fisheries and Oceans, Mr. Kostas Kadis. Cyprus was represented by the Mayor of Limassol and officials from the Shipping Deputy Ministry.
According to Cyprus News Agency, the EMD 2026, organized by the Republic of Cyprus, will be held on May 21 and 22, 2026, coinciding with the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the European Union. Limassol will serve as the main venue for the celebrations, with additional events taking place in other coastal cities across Cyprus.
The coordination of the EMD 2026 has been undertaken by the Shipping Deputy Ministry, in collaboration with other competent Ministries, local authorities, and stakeholders from the blue economy sectors. European Maritime Day is recognized as the EU’s flagship annual event for the marine and maritime community and stakeholders of the blue economy. Cyprus, known for its maritime heritage, is honored to host the event in Limassol, a city that embodies blue growth, innovation, and European cooperation.
EMD 2026 aims to provide a platform for open dialogue, exchange of ideas, and the promotion of collective action for sustainable ocean development and the blue economy. Preparations are in progress, in close collaboration with the European Commission, to ensure a seamless and successful event that highlights Cyprus’ maritime identity and European outlook.
