Cyprus Takes Steps to Address Waste Management Issues

Paphos:Cyprus Compliance measures are underway, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, following Cyprus' referral to the Court of Justice of the European Union for non-compliance with the Landfill Directive and the Waste Framework Directive.

According to Cyprus News Agency, the Ministry stated that the referral relates to previously identified compliance issues, with actions already in progress. The main focus is on the management of municipal waste in Paphos district and the lack of a comprehensive waste management network across the island.

The Ministry highlighted that waste management challenges persist and are being addressed through specific planning. This includes immediate interventions and long-term strategies for transitioning to a modern and sustainable waste management system.

Immediate plans involve necessary interventions for the operation and upgrading of landfills at Pentakomo and Koshi villages. The goal is to ensure that the new infrastructures can be integrated into the future waste management system, thereby offering long-term value for the investments.

In Paphos district, the Ministry aims to develop infrastructure to reduce municipal waste by diverting recyclable materials and organic waste. The proposed solutions are designed to be comprehensive and multidimensional, affecting all of Cyprus, including remote communities. The Ministry emphasized that the success of these actions depends on cooperation among all stakeholders.

Further, the Ministry is focusing on expanding separate waste collection, optimizing available infrastructure, and promoting practices that increase recycling and reduce sanitary waste.
