Nicosia: Cyprus is positioning itself as a trusted partner for space innovation, Earth observation, and space-enabled services, Deputy Minister of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy of the Republic of Cyprus, Dr. Nicodemos Damianou has told CNA. According to Cyprus News Agency, the Deputy Minister, who recently signed a Joint Declaration with France on cooperation in space activities during the Space Summit in Paris, emphasized that this agreement creates a framework for closer collaboration in Earth observation, space science, and satellite telecommunications. The significance of space in understanding climate change, responding to natural disasters, enhancing connectivity, safeguarding critical infrastructure, and supporting both innovation and defense capabilities underscores the need for such international partnerships. Furthermore, the Deputy Minister highlighted that the discussions and declarations adopted at last week's International Space Summit in Paris reflect a shared European understanding of these priorities. Over recent years, Cyprus has transitioned from merely utilizing space services to becoming an emerging contributor to Europe's space ecosystem. This progress has been aided by active participation in European Space Programs, associate membership with the European Space Agency, strategic investments in satellite ground infrastructure, and innovation-focused initiatives like the Space Business Incubation Centre. He stressed the importance of international cooperation as central to Cyprus's strategy and the purpose of the Space Summit. The Joint Declaration signed with France provides a framework for sharing expertise and experience, encouraging joint research and industry initiatives, and bolstering coordination within the European Space Agency and other international platforms. The Deputy Minister concluded by noting that the longstanding relationship between Cyprus and France continues to deepen across strategic sectors. Building on the Strategic Partnership established by Presidents C hristodoulides and Macron, the signing of the Joint Declaration is a reflection of their shared political will to enhance cooperation for a stronger, more resilient, and autonomous Europe.
