Cyprus Strengthens National Guard and Seeks Regional Stability Amid Independence Celebrations

Nicosia: The President of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, has reiterated the country’s commitment to bolstering the deterrent power of the National Guard. In a statement following the military parade celebrating Cyprus’ Independence Day, President Christodoulides emphasized the ongoing struggle for the liberation of Cyprus, reflecting the island nation’s continued focus on national defense and sovereignty.

According to Cyprus News Agency, Cyprus’ strategic importance in regional partnerships was highlighted by State Secretary Marco Rubio, who congratulated Cyprus on its 65th Independence Day anniversary, calling it a “valued partner” of the United States. He reaffirmed the U.S. commitment to a UN-facilitated comprehensive settlement to reunify Cyprus as a bizonal, bicommunal federation with political equality.

The Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs joined in congratulating Cyprus, reiterating its support for a BBF (bi-zonal, bi-communal federation) solution, aligning with UN Security Council resolutions. The President of the Hellenic Parliament, Nikitas Kaklamanis, underscored the importance of unity between Greece and Cyprus in their shared struggle for the island’s reunification.

European institutions also extended their congratulations to Cyprus, with the European Council President, Antonio Costa, acknowledging the significance of Cyprus’ Independence Day in a social media post. This coincides with Cyprus’ upcoming presidency of the Council of the EU, further elevating its role on the European stage.

President Christodoulides sees a “window of hope” for resolving the Cyprus issue, emphasizing the potential for progress despite barriers. In a bid to enhance EU-NATO cooperation, Christodoulides met with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, focusing on strengthening European defense and security initiatives such as Readiness 2030.

Celebrations extended beyond Cyprus, with Brussels hosting an event where the iconic Manneken Pis statue was dressed in traditional Cypriot attire. Cyprus’ zero inflation rate in September 2025, as reported by Eurostat, marks an economic anomaly compared to the moderate inflation across the Eurozone.

In the context of global diplomacy, Ireland expressed support for resolving the Cyprus problem, emphasizing adherence to original UN resolutions. The Cyprus Composite Leading Economic Index (CCLEI) also recorded a 1.8% year-over-year increase, signaling economic resilience.

As Cyprus navigates its national defense and diplomatic engagements, the government remains focused on achieving reunification and maintaining regional stability, reinforcing its position as a pivotal player in the Eastern Mediterranean landscape.
