Nicosia: The Republic of Cyprus has consciously chosen to be present, reliable, and useful in the international community, stated the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Konstantinos Kombos, on Tuesday evening. In his speech at the World Conference of Diaspora Cypriots in Nicosia, Kombos emphasized that the Cypriot Diaspora is a valuable partner in the nation's ongoing efforts for liberation and reunification.
According to Cyprus News Agency, the Foreign Minister, speaking on behalf of President Nikos Christodoulides, highlighted the enduring connection between the Cypriot diaspora and the Republic of Cyprus, noting that distance and time have not weakened their bonds. Kombos praised the diaspora for preserving Cypriot identity, values, and culture abroad, and for supporting the state's efforts through their influence and dedication.
Kombos underscored Cyprus's active foreign policy in a complex international environment, stating that the nation is strengthening relations with strategic partners and investing in multilateral cooperation. He reiterated Cyprus's commitment to leveraging its European status and regional relations to bolster national strength without defeatism, and with an awareness of its capabilities and limitations.
Reflecting on Cyprus's recent presidency of the Council of the European Union, Kombos mentioned the recognition and praise the country received for its dedication and focus, which promoted Cyprus for the right reasons. He also marked the 52nd anniversary of the ongoing Turkish occupation of Cypriot territory, condemning it as a violation of international legitimacy and human rights, and reaffirmed Cyprus's commitment to reunification.
Kombos stressed that Cyprus's strong economy, demonstrated by high growth rates and low unemployment, is essential for a robust foreign policy. He highlighted ongoing efforts for negotiations within the UN Security Council framework, with EU support, to resolve the Cyprus issue.
The Foreign Minister emphasized the importance of strengthening ties with the Greek diaspora and implementing the "New Strategic Relationship," focusing on engaging diaspora youth. He outlined initiatives to enhance communication and interaction with the Cypriot diaspora, describing them as methodical and cooperative efforts.
"The Diaspora, our expatriates, are an integral part of our national strength," Kombos concluded, affirming Cyprus's commitment to its diaspora as a vital component of its international presence and collective struggle.
