Cyprus Reports Hundreds of Turkish Military Violations to UN

Hanoi:The Republic of Cyprus has officially reported 659 violations by Turkish military forces to the United Nations, citing incidents occurring during June and July 2026. This report was conveyed through a letter dated 29 September 2026 from Cyprus' Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Maria Michail, addressed to the UN Secretary-General.

According to Cyprus News Agency, the letter, distributed on 2 October 2026 as a document of the UN General Assembly and Security Council, details 626 air violations and 33 naval violations. These incidents include breaches of Cyprus' national airspace, infringements of international air traffic regulations within the Nicosia Flight Information Region (FIR), violations of territorial waters, and illegal use of closed ports and airports in Cyprus.

The letter and its annexes highlight that of the 626 recorded air violations, 203 were committed by Turkish military unmanned aerial vehicles, and 192 involved Turkish armed military fighter aircraft. Additionally, Turkey reportedly conducted unauthorized military exercises within Cyprus' national airspace, issuing one illegal notice to airmen.

Annexes to the letter document the involvement of Turkish F-16 fighter aircraft, BAYRAKTAR TB-2, ANKA, AKINCI, and AKSUNGUR military drones, along with helicopters and other aircraft entering the Nicosia FIR and Cyprus' national airspace without diplomatic clearance or contact with Nicosia ACC.

Naval violations involved Turkish warships such as missile boats, frigates, submarines, landing ships, and patrol vessels. These vessels allegedly breached Cyprus' territorial waters and unlawfully used the closed ports of Famagusta and Kyrenia during naval operations by the occupation forces.

Ambassador Michail highlighted the ongoing nature of these violations by Turkish forces, stating that they are not isolated incidents but part of a broader pattern that undermines the sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity of Cyprus. She emphasized that such actions violate the UN Charter and international law.

The Cypriot representative also stressed that these persistent violations hinder efforts to build trust necessary for resuming negotiations towards resolving the Cyprus issue. She reaffirmed Cyprus' commitment to supporting UN efforts for a comprehensive and just settlement that would reunify the island in line with UN Security Council resolutions.
