Cyprus Ratifies Multiple Conventions and Protocols at Council of Europe

Strasbourg: Permanent Representative of Cyprus at the Council of Europe, Ambassador George Yiangou, has deposited the instruments of ratification for several Conventions and Protocols to Bj¸rn Berge, the Deputy Secretary General of the Council of Europe.

According to Cyprus News Agency, the documents include the Additional Protocol to the Convention on Human Rights and Biomedicine, concerning Biomedical Research (CETS No. 195), and the Fourth Additional Protocol to the European Convention on Extradition (CETS No. 212). Both are set to enter into force in respect to Cyprus on 1 March 2026. Additionally, the Council of Europe Convention on an Integrated Safety, Security and Service Approach at Football Matches and Other Sports Events (CETS No. 218) will be effective from 1 January 2026, while the Protocol amending the Additional Protocol to the Convention on the Transfer of Sentenced Persons (CETS No. 222) currently has no set date for entry into force.

Cyprus has also signed the Council of Europe Convention for the Protection of the Profession of Lawyer (CETS No. 226). This move reflects Cyprus’s commitment to enhancing legal protections and aligning with international standards.

The ratification of the Saint-Denis Convention, which addresses safety, security, and service at football matches and other sports events, comes with the denunciation of the European Convention on Spectator Violence and Misbehaviour at Sports Events and at Football Matches (ETS No. 120). This denunciation will be effective for Cyprus on 1 June 2026.
