Cyprus Pursues Participation in EU SAFE Financial Instrument

Nicosia: The Cyprus National Defence Industry Council (NDIC) has made an initial decision to pursue participation in the European Union’s SAFE financial instrument. This decision was reached during an extraordinary meeting held on Monday at the Ministry of Defence.

According to Cyprus News Agency, the decision follows a Cabinet meeting chaired by the President of the Republic, Nicos Christodoulides, on 10 July 2025. The NDIC’s meeting aimed to brief its members on the rationale behind the decision, outline the subsequent steps, and discuss potential opportunities this initiative could create for Cyprus’s defence industry.

The issue of Cyprus’s involvement in the SAFE instrument was previously discussed at an NDIC session on 2 June 2025. Additionally, stakeholders from the national defence ecosystem were informed during a briefing session on 22 May 2025. The Ministry of Defence has been actively participating in EU-level consultations that shaped the SAFE instrument, as stated in the press release.
