Nicosia: The effort to strengthen the deterrent power of the National Guard will continue, President of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides said on Wednesday, in press statements following the military parade, in Nicosia, for Cyprus’ Independence Day.
According to Cyprus News Agency, the President emphasized that the struggle continues to achieve the highest goal, which is the liberation of the homeland. He highlighted the importance of today’s rituals, explaining that they hold significant value for the new generations. The President mentioned that in the morning, officials visited the Imprisoned Graves to honor those who fought and sacrificed their lives for the country. The graves are the resting place of EOKA anti-colonial liberation struggle heroes.
The President also noted that a wreath-laying ceremony took place at the statue of the first President of the Republic, Archbishop Makarios, at the Presidential Palace, and at the Resistance Monument for those who defended the Republic of Cyprus against the Turkish rebellion in 1964 and 1974. He further stated that the parade is held to honor those who currently defend the Republic.
President Christodoulides remarked that Cyprus, now celebrating its 65th anniversary, has faced challenges as a young state but managed to become an EU member state, consistently upgrading its status. He stressed the duty to enhance the Republic of Cyprus and achieve the ultimate goal of liberation and reunification of the homeland.
He elaborated that while striving for liberation, there is an obligation to strengthen all power factors in Cyprus with concrete actions-maintaining a strong economy, upholding the rule of law, addressing corruption, and pursuing an open-minded foreign policy. This approach, he said, proves that Cyprus is part of solutions to regional and international challenges, thereby upgrading the Republic’s status and strengthening its negotiating position regarding the Cyprus problem.
The President extended warm congratulations to those who participated in the parade, expressing pride in the display. He highlighted that the strengthening of the National Guard’s deterrent power begins with the upgrading of its officers and personnel. New armament programs were showcased during the parade, and the President affirmed the commitment to continue and enhance efforts to acquire new military weapons through European Union support and collaborations with strategic partners, including the United States.
When asked about the significance of the Greek F-16 fighter jets’ presence, the President stated that it underscores the common struggle of Cyprus and Greece for the liberation and reunification of their homeland. Additionally, he noted that Cyprus and Greece, as EU member states, are pillars of security and stability in the region.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974, following Turkey’s invasion and occupation of its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have yet to produce successful outcomes. The most recent negotiations, held in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana, ended without resolution.
