Cyprus President to Meet UNSG Envoy Amid Ongoing Peace Efforts

Nicosia:President Nikos Christodoulides is scheduled to meet with the United Nations Secretary-General's personal envoy, Maria Angela Holguin, on Tuesday at 1515 local time, as announced by the Presidency. This meeting is part of ongoing efforts to address the long-standing division of Cyprus.

According to Cyprus News Agency, Holguin recently met with Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman. Additionally, a tripartite meeting involving Holguin and both Cypriot leaders is set for November 9. These discussions are part of an effort to seek responses to proposals submitted to the UN and issues discussed with the envoy.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 following Turkey's invasion and occupation of its northern third. Numerous UN-led peace talks have yet to achieve a resolution, primarily due to Turkish intransigence. The most recent negotiations in July 2017 at Crans-Montana, Switzerland, concluded without success.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, approaching the end of his term, has announced plans for another meeting in a broader format, contingent upon adequate preparation, though no timeline has been set. He has secured agreement from both sides and the guarantor powers for this initiative. María Angela Holguín, Guterres' personal envoy, is actively engaging with the parties, while Executive Vice-President Raffaele Fitto serves as the European Commission’s Special Representative for Cyprus, succeeding former EU special envoy Johannes Hahn.
