Nicosia: Cyprus President, Nikos Christodoulides, is set to emphasize the importance of multilateralism, collective responsibility, and cooperation during his address at the Plenary of the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, scheduled for Wednesday at 21:00 Cyprus time.
According to Cyprus News Agency, President Christodoulides plans to highlight the significance of these themes at a critical geopolitical juncture, as well as the positions of the Republic of Cyprus on regional and European initiatives. The speech will also cover the upcoming Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU.
Additionally, President Christodoulides will discuss efforts toward a resolution of the Cyprus problem and the reunification of the divided island. Cyprus has remained divided since 1974 when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Despite numerous UN-led peace talks, a lasting solution has yet to be achieved. The most recent negotiations, which took place in July 2017 at the Crans-Montana resort in Switzerland, ended without a conclusive agreement.
