Cyprus President Proposes Initiative for Gaza at Sharm el-Sheikh Summit

Sharm el-sheikh: Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides presented Nicosia’s initiative concerning security, the reconstruction of Gaza, and the humanitarian sector during his interactions at the Gaza Summit held in Sharm el-Sheikh.

According to Cyprus News Agency, President Christodoulides stated after the Peace Summit that the proposal is currently in development with the aim of implementing the first phase of the agreement. He emphasized the Republic of Cyprus’s commitment to contributing towards this goal.

In an announcement by the Presidency, President Christodoulides highlighted the Republic of Cyprus’s excellent relations with neighboring states and its status as the sole EU member in the region. He noted Cyprus’s upcoming EU Presidency and reiterated that, similar to the initiative presented in Paris in October 2023 regarding a humanitarian corridor, Cyprus is now proposing six specific initiatives based on the US President’s plan.

President Christodoulides also mentioned that he had briefed the President of the European Commission about Cyprus’s initiative, underlining the importance of the Commission’s contribution, as well as other state leaders he communicated with in the past 24 hours. The initiative focuses on six proposals within three key areas: security, reconstruction, and the humanitarian sector, aligned with the US President’s plan.
