New york: President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, is traveling to New York to address the 81st United Nations General Assembly. While in New York, he will meet with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, his Personal Envoy for Cyprus, Maria Angela Holguin, as well as leaders from various states and organizations.
According to Cyprus News Agency, President Christodoulides will also engage with the Cypriot diaspora during his visit. His engagements will start on the evening of September 20 with a meeting with leaders of the Greek diaspora organizations to discuss developments on the Cyprus issue.
On September 21, the President will meet with King Abdullah II of Jordan and later participate in a summit on multilateralism, international law, peace, and prosperity, co-hosted by the President of the European Council Antonio Costa and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.
President Christodoulides will attend the opening of the Plenary Session of the Summit on September 22, where the UN Secretary-General will present his Progress Report. He will also meet with Javier la Rosa, President of Chevron's Base Assets and Emerging Countries Department, and later with Maria Angela Holguin, the UN Secretary-General's Personal Envoy for Cyprus.
On September 23, President Christodoulides will address the UN General Assembly's Plenary Session. He will also participate in a High-Level Meeting on Climate Change, organized by the UN Secretary-General, and meet with John Ardill, Vice President of ExxonMobil.
The President will attend a working breakfast on September 24, organized by the Antenna Group and the Atlantic Council, focusing on EU-Gulf cooperation. He will then meet with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and host a luncheon for the Permanent Representatives of the five Permanent Members of the UN Security Council.
On September 25, President Christodoulides is scheduled to meet with Han Zheng, Vice President of the People's Republic of China, and representatives of the AJC. His trip will conclude with a dinner in his honor organized by Cypriot diaspora organizations before returning to Cyprus on September 26.
Cyprus has faced division since 1974 due to Turkey's invasion and occupation of its northern third. Attempts at UN-led peace talks have yet to succeed due to Turkish intransigence, with the most recent negotiations in 2017 ending without resolution. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres plans to convene another broader meeting after adequate preparation, with Mara Angela Holgun tasked with facilitating engagement between the parties.
