Chisinau: The future of Moldova is European, Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides declared following a meeting with Moldovan President Maia Sandu in Chisinau. This marks the first official visit by a Cypriot President to Moldova.
According to Cyprus News Agency, President Christodoulides emphasized the significance of his visit, coinciding with Cyprus' Presidency of the Council of the European Union. He commended President Sandu as a "true European," highlighting her representation of the resilience and strength of the Moldovan people. Christodoulides noted the importance of the visit occurring on Europe Day, symbolizing Moldova's European aspirations.
President Christodoulides outlined Cyprus' commitment to the EU enlargement process, stressing that Moldova's progress since gaining candidate status in June 2022 demonstrates its dedication. He emphasized the Cyprus Presidency's efforts to open negotiating Clusters, starting with Cluster 1 in June, which focus on rule of law, justice reform, and fundamental rights.
Parallel negotiations aim to deliver immediate benefits to Moldovans, with the EU recently releasing 200 million euros to boost the Moldovan economy. This investment aims to modernize infrastructure and create high-tech jobs, supporting Moldova's European path.
President Christodoulides highlighted the growing bilateral relationship between Cyprus and Moldova, noting the initiation of negotiations on a bilateral Social Security agreement and future agreements to enhance connectivity and exchanges.
President Sandu expressed admiration for Cyprus' path and emphasized Moldova's commitment to EU accession as a vital national project. She reiterated Moldova's support for Cyprus' sovereignty and territorial integrity, acknowledging the shared values and experiences of both nations.
