Cyprus President Advocates for EU Autonomy and Regional Role

Maastricht:Cyprus aims to be a steadfast bridge connecting the European Union with the Middle East and the Gulf, stressed President Nikos Christodoulides during his speech at the University of Maastricht. Emphasizing the need to end the illegal occupation and reunify Cyprus, he highlighted the nation's potential to strengthen this role.

According to Cyprus News Agency, President Christodoulides outlined the vision of a more united, stronger, and strategically autonomous European Union. He underscored that turbulent times offer the EU an opportunity to become a reliable and trustworthy partner on the global stage.

Cyprus, positioned at the crossroads of Europe and the Middle East, offers unique insights into regional challenges and opportunities, he noted. The President emphasized the importance of engaging with neighboring regions to enhance partnerships and strategic autonomy without turning inward.

He highlighted Cyprus' efforts during its presidency of the EU Council to reinforce regional cooperation and its initiatives in emergency response and climate change. Cyprus has facilitated the evacuation of thousands and spearheaded regional initiatives such as the Cyprus Regional Aerial Firefighting Station.

The President also pointed to the ongoing occupation of Cyprus by Turkish forces as a barrier to fully realizing the nation's role within the EU. He stressed that Cyprus' EU membership is pivotal in pursuing a sustainable solution to reunify the island, ensuring the rights of all Cypriots.

Concluding his speech, Christodoulides called for leadership from Europe during challenging times, urging the next generation to shape a more ambitious and autonomous Union.
