New york: The Permanent Representative of Cyprus to the United Nations, Ambassador Maria Michail, presented the annual report of the Committee on Relations with the Host Country to the Sixth Committee of the UN General Assembly. The report focuses on legal matters concerning the relationship between the United Nations and its host country.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Ambassador Michail highlighted that during the reporting period, the Committee conducted six meetings. These meetings addressed significant issues such as the implementation of the 1947 Headquarters Agreement, the 1946 Convention on the Privileges and Immunities of the United Nations, and the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations. Key topics included the issuance of entry visas, travel restrictions, and the security of missions.
Ambassador Michail emphasized that resolving these issues requires sincere and constructive exchanges of views, grounded in international law. She noted that the Committee holds a unique role within the UN system as the sole body addressing matters related to the Host Country, subsequently submitting a report to the General Assembly.
Ambassador Michail expressed gratitude to the Committee members for their cooperation and constructive spirit during the informal consultations for Chapter IV, titled ‘Recommendations and Conclusions,’ which is directed to the Secretary-General.
In her concluding remarks, Ambassador Michail reiterated her dedication to maintaining a collaborative relationship with the Host Country and committed to addressing outstanding issues with compromise and respect for the United Nations’ best interests.
