Nicosia:Greek Cypriot negotiator Menelaos Menelaou and Turkish Cypriot leader's representative Mehmet Dana are scheduled to meet on Monday afternoon. This meeting is a precursor to a potential meeting between the two leaders, which may occur next Tuesday. An official announcement regarding these meetings is anticipated soon.
According to Cyprus News Agency, President Nikos Christodoulides and Tufan Erhurman have met on two consecutive Tuesdays, October 13 and 20. During these meetings, the leaders agreed to engage with the Technical Committees on Youth and Cultural Heritage and the Civil Society Advisory Body. However, specific dates for these engagements have yet to be confirmed.
Cyprus remains divided since 1974 following Turkey's invasion and occupation of the northern third of the island. Despite numerous UN-led peace talks, a resolution has not been achieved, attributed to Turkish intransigence. The most recent negotiations in July 2017 at Crans-Montana, Switzerland, ended without conclusion.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has announced plans to convene another meeting in a broader format, contingent on adequate preparation, though he did not provide a timeline. Guterres has secured agreement from both sides and the guarantor powers for this initiative. María Angela Holguín, Guterres' Personal Envoy on Cyprus, is tasked with engaging the parties, while Executive Vice-President Raffaele Fitto serves as the European Commission's Special Representative for Cyprus, following EU special envoy Johannes Hahn.
