New York: Leaders in Cyprus are eagerly anticipating the arrival of United Nations Secretary-General’s personal envoy, Maria ngela Holgun, in the coming weeks. This announcement was made by Farhan Haq, Deputy Spokesperson for the Secretary-General, during a news briefing at the UN headquarters.
According to Cyprus News Agency, the appointment of Holgun was confirmed last Friday. Haq mentioned that following an informal meeting on the Cyprus issue in Geneva on March 17 and 18, the Secretary-General tasked Ms. Holgun with re-engaging with the parties to discuss the next steps and provide guidance on the Cyprus issue.
Holgun previously served as the Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy from January to July 2024 and has extensive diplomatic experience, including her role as Minister of Foreign Affairs of Colombia.
The meeting between Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar and Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides took place at Ledra Palace under the guidance of Colin Stewart, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Cyprus. Both leaders expressed their approval of Mara ngela Holgun Cu©llar’s reappointment and are looking forward to her visit.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974 following Turkey’s invasion and occupation of the northern third of the island. Despite numerous UN-led peace talks, a resolution has not been achieved, with the last significant negotiations in 2017 at Crans-Montana ending without agreement.
