Nicosia:A new meeting between the leaders of Cyprus' two communities is scheduled to take place on Tuesday morning. President Nikos Christodoulides has described the atmosphere ahead of the meeting as 'absolutely fine'.
According to Cyprus News Agency, the meeting is set for 11 am at the UN Good Offices Mission offices located at Nicosia Airport, within the buffer zone. Government Spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis stated that the aim is to make meaningful progress towards resuming negotiations from where they last left off, within an agreed framework.
Letymbiotis emphasized the constructive attitude being brought to the meeting, along with consistency and specific proposals, believing that meaningful dialogue can pave the way for future steps. The President, after inaugurating the renovated Nicosia Accident and Emergency Department, refrained from making statements on the meeting, only noting the positive atmosphere.
The previous meeting between President Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman occurred last Tuesday, October 13. Both leaders also participated in the Peace Festival in Pyla on Saturday. Cyprus remains divided since 1974 following Turkey's invasion and occupation of its northern third. Numerous UN-led peace talks have not yet succeeded, primarily due to Turkish intransigence, with the last negotiations in 2017 ending inconclusively.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, nearing the end of his term, has planned another meeting in a broader format after sufficient preparation, but no timeline has been provided. He has secured consensus from both sides and the guarantor powers. María Angela Holguín, Guterres' Personal Envoy on Cyprus, and Executive Vice-President Raffaele Fitto, the European Commission's Special Representative for Cyprus, are involved in the ongoing efforts.
