Cyprus Labour Market Shows Remarkable Resilience Amid Global Challenges

Nicosia:The labour market in Cyprus has demonstrated exceptional resilience despite facing numerous external challenges since the pandemic. Unemployment in the country declined to a historical low of 3.6% in the second quarter of 2026, while employment rates continue to rise, supported by significant inflows of foreign workers and sustained high participation rates among Cypriots.

According to Cyprus News Agency, the resilience of Cyprus's labour market is attributed to several factors. The strong performance of labour-intensive service sectors like tourism, professional services, information technology, and financial services has driven substantial demand for labour. These sectors have shown considerable adaptability and recovery following the pandemic. Additionally, foreign investment inflows and the establishment of international companies have bolstered labour demand, particularly in the technology and financial services sectors.

The report highlights that policies aimed at attracting both highly skilled and lower-skilled workers from abroad have supported economic activity and alleviated pressures from labour shortages. The contribution of non-Cypriot workers has been significant, with their share in total employment increasing to nearly 28% in 2025.

Despite the positive outlook, challenges remain, particularly due to the economy's reliance on export-oriented service sectors and demographic trends such as population aging. These factors could limit future growth in the labour force. Additionally, rising housing costs and skills mismatches in certain sectors pose challenges to maintaining labour market resilience.

To sustain favourable labour market conditions, policies focusing on increasing labour force participation, skills development, and productivity improvements are essential. Measures such as enhancing STEM skills, promoting flexible work, and improving housing availability are recommended to address these challenges and support long-term economic growth in Cyprus.
