Nicosia: Justice Minister, Constantinos Fytiris, announced on Tuesday the key elements for a successful EU Presidency, highlighting security, seamless operation execution, and high operational readiness as foundational prerequisites.
According to Cyprus News Agency, the Minister detailed the General Policing Operational Plan for Cyprus's upcoming Presidency of the Council of the EU, set to commence on January 1st. Fytiris emphasized that taking on the Presidency represents a significant challenge and opportunity for the Republic of Cyprus, a challenge that must be met successfully.
The Ministry's press release elaborates that the operational plan was crafted by the Cyprus Police, in conjunction with the Secretariat of the Cyprus Presidency and other relevant state entities. The plan's main goal is to ensure the safety and security of all foreign dignitaries, delegations, and conference attendees visiting Cyprus over the following six months.
Minister Fytiris extended his commendations to the Cyprus Police for their thorough and well-documented operational plan and acknowledged their preparedness level. He affirmed the Ministry of Justice and Public Order's readiness to offer all necessary support and assistance, enabling the Police to fulfill their duties effectively.
The Operational Plan encompasses various aspects of police work, including information collection and evaluation, risk assessment, security protocols, and support for foreign delegations. Special focus is placed on airport security, traffic management, the safety of accommodation and conference sites, and the orchestration of high-profile events.
Fytiris underscored that the safe and efficient conduct of the Cyprus EU Presidency is a national duty, stressing the importance of ensuring the country's security, institutional commitment, and international credibility amid heightened European engagement and expectations.
