The Cyprus problem, the developments in the Middle East and immigration were the issues discussed at a meeting held between President of the House of Representatives Annita Demetriou and German Ambassador to Cyprus Anke Schlimm.
According to a press release by the Parliament, Demetriou referred to an informal dinner to be held later today between the UNSG and the President of the Republic and the leader of the Turkish Cypriot community in New York, as a positive development, expressing the hope that the deadlock will be lifted and that this effort will lead to resumption of substantive negotiations to resolve the Cyprus issue, in accordance with the relevant UN Resolutions.
She also pointed out the interconnection of EU-Turkey relations with the Cyprus issue, and said that it is expected from Turkey to show good will and abandon its unacceptable claims about a “two-state” solution.
Regarding developments in the Middle East, both sides expressed concern about the worsening situation and stressed that diplom
atic efforts for de-escalation must be intensified.
The House President underlined the firm position of Cyprus in favour of reaching a peaceful solution in the Middle East on the basis of two states. She also underlined the need for a clear strategy at the level of the European Union to immediately address the multiple effects of the war situation in the Middle East, especially in terms of energy and the increasing migratory pressures towards frontline countries, such as Cyprus.
Demetriou thanked Germany for the help and solidarity through the relocation program of beneficiaries of international protection.
They both underlined the need for the immediate implementation of the European Pact on Migration and Asylum.
The Ambassador of Germany expressed her country’s appreciation for the readiness of Cyprus to provide all possible assistance for the evacuation of German citizens from the war zone, if and when necessary, and praised the cordial cooperation between the two countries on this specific issue, but
also more broadly.
