Cyprus Issue and Energy Security Focus of MED9 Summit in Split

Split:The 13th Summit of the Southern Countries of the European Union (MED9) is set to convene tomorrow in Split, Croatia, with key discussions centered around the Cyprus issue, Eastern Mediterranean developments, and energy security. Leaders from the MED9 member states, which include Croatia, Cyprus, France, Greece, Italy, Malta, Portugal, Slovenia, and Spain, will participate, alongside notable guests such as Prince Albert II of Monaco, the Crown Prince of Jordan, and top EU officials.

According to Cyprus News Agency, the summit's draft declaration emphasizes a commitment to resolving the Cyprus issue within the UN framework, highlighting the importance of Turkey's role in resuming talks. The leaders stress the necessity of avoiding unilateral actions to foster a conducive environment for negotiations.

The draft also underscores the EU's strategic interest in a stable Eastern Mediterranean and calls for resolving disputes peacefully while respecting international law. Additionally, the leaders express concern over the regional security situation, referencing conflicts in Ukraine, Gaza, and other areas.

Migration and climate issues are also on the agenda, with calls for a united European response to border pressures and enhanced EU Civil Protection Mechanisms in light of recent wildfires. On energy, the leaders advocate for cross-border stress tests and support for clean technology initiatives under the Pact for the Mediterranean.
