Split:Cyprus is positioning itself as a steady and reliable partner between Europe and the Middle East, President Nikos Christodoulides emphasized during the 13th MED9 summit in Croatia.

According to Cyprus News Agency, President Christodoulides underscored the importance of the Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) in enhancing the Mediterranean dimension of the EU agenda. He expressed gratitude for the continued support from other leaders in efforts to resolve the Cyprus issue, as reflected in the joint declaration they adopted.

The President highlighted Cyprus's strategic geographical location, which allows it to facilitate partnerships and cooperation across regions. A significant initiative mentioned was the Amalthea Maritime Humanitarian Corridor, which has delivered over 37,000 tonnes of aid to Gaza. This corridor is poised to support recovery efforts in Gaza when conditions allow.

Cyprus has also played a crucial role in evacuating citizens during crises, having assisted thousands from 70 countries over the past three years. Additionally, the Cyprus Center for Land, Open Seas and Port Security, established with the US, has trained officials from nearly 60 countries.

Christodoulides noted Cyprus's efforts in addressing climate change through the Eastern Mediterranean - Middle East Climate Change Initiative. This initiative aims to enhance resilience and adaptation across the region. Furthermore, the newly established Cyprus Regional Air Fire Fighting Station is a collaborative effort supported by the European Commission.

Regarding the MFF, Christodoulides stressed the necessity of ensuring adequate funding for migration, border management, and climate resilience. He advocated for visible EU engagement with the Mediterranean region in the next MFF and emphasized the need to balance new priorities with cohesion and agricultural policy. Recognizing Cyprus's unique geographic challenges, he called for consideration of these factors in the MFF.
