Nicosia: President Nikos Christodoulides stated on Sunday that the electricity interconnection between Cyprus and Greece is part of the implementation framework of the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC). He noted that this project, along with several other initiatives, would be announced by the European Union during Cyprus’ EU Presidency.
According to Cyprus News Agency, President Christodoulides made these comments after attending a memorial service in Nicosia. When questioned about whether the electricity interconnection project involving Cyprus, Greece, and Israel takes on a new geopolitical significance through its association with the IMEC-following statements by Greece’s Energy Minister-the President emphasized the importance of the India-Middle East-Europe interconnection as a project that strengthens ties between the EU and the US. He highlighted that specific projects within the broader IMEC framework would aid in advancing its implementation.
The President further stated that the electricity interconnection is a part of this framework, along with various other ongoing actions, and many more initiatives are set to be announced by the EU during Cyprus’ Presidency. He underscored that these are not merely declarations or goals but concrete projects aimed at enhancing the IMEC’s prospects. This initiative also serves to demonstrate the EU’s genuine interest and involvement in the wider Middle East region.
