Nicosia:The Council of Ministers in Cyprus has sanctioned emergency financial assistance amounting to £4.6 million for farmers impacted by the severe drought in 2025. This decision follows a proposal put forward by the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment.
According to Cyprus News Agency, this funding will be fully sourced from European funds, secured after persuading the European Commission to activate the European Union's Agricultural Reserve. The primary goal is to support the income of affected farmers and ensure the sustainability of their agricultural operations.
The Ministry's statement highlighted that the extended period of drought, high temperatures, and limited irrigation resources in 2025 have adversely affected agricultural production. This has created challenges for various crops, honey production, and has increased the cost of animal feed.
The preliminary plan for the emergency support includes aid for producers of cereals, citrus fruits, olives, and bananas, along with beekeepers, sheep and goat farmers, and cattle farmers.
